BEIJING, Oct. 12 (China Space News) — Chinese aerospace expert Liu Jiyuan was given the Von Karman Award, the highest such prize presented by the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) at its 62nd International Astronautical Congress (IAC). It is the first time a Chinese expert was given such an honor.

Wang Liheng, a senior technology consultant of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, was presented the Mykhailo Yangel Medal. The honor given by Ukraine is awarded to those who made great contributions to space rocket development and the international cooperation of space exploration.

The International Astronautical Federation (IAF) is a non-governmental federation of organizations active in space, aiming to advance studies and cooperation in space technology and outer space through scientific and technical exchange.

The Chinese Society of Astronautics became a member of IAF in 1980. Since 1983 eight Chinese space experts have been elected as vice presidents of IAF, including Yang Jiachi, Lu Yuanjiu, Chen Fangyun, Liang Sili, Chen Huaijin, Yuan Jiajun, Wu Yansheng and Yuan Jie. The 64th International Astronautical Congress will be held in Beijing two years later.
