At 7:01 on September 20, 2015, a new generation carrier rocket, the LM-6 has successfully blasted off from Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center, which had become the first flight carrier rocket of China's new generation launch vehicle family. This is the 210th launch of the Long March series carrier rockets. The LM-6 was developed by Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC).
After a flight of more than 980 seconds the LM-6 successfully sent 20 satellites into space, creating a new record of multi-satellite launch on one launch vehicle.
The 20 satellites were developed by two satellite developers of CASC and domestic four universities. These satellites are used mainly for such space experiments as new space technology, new space system and new space products to promote the development of micro satellites, and the experiment and verification of new technologies.
As a new generation of China’s three-stage liquid propellant launch vehicle, the LM-6 is a non-¬¬toxic and non-pollution carrier rocket and has short launch preparation time, which is mainly used to meet the needs of the launch of micro satellites. The total length of the LM-6 is 29 m, the diameter of the first stage is 3.35 m and the second stage and third stage is 2.25m.Aand its takeoff thrust is 1200 kN, and 700 km sun-synchronous orbit carrying capacity is 1 ton.
The LM-6 power system uses the liquid oxygen /kerosene engine developed by Academy of Aerospace Propulsion Technology for 30 years. Due to the liquid oxygen and kerosene as propellants, the launch vehicle has environmental protection and economic characteristics.
It is reported that the follow-up of the engine will also be widely used in other members of the "new generation rocket family", the LM-5 and LM-7.
Compared with conventional rockets, the LM-6 had created the overall horizontal test of the rocket, the overall horizontal stack of the satellites and the rocket, and the overall horizontal transportation,erection and vertical launch of the launch vehicle.
Due to the successful use of the "three-horizontal " technology, it was possible to realize the quick launch of the carrier rocket, break through 20 days to 30 days of the existing rocket's test, launch and control, so that preparation time for the launch was shortened to seven days or less.
