BEIJING, Dec. 1 (China Space News) -- China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) relaunched a subsidiary on Oct. 29 that will provide geographical information services, according to CASC at the inauguration ceremony.
The setting up of the new CSMTC (Siwei Surveying and Mapping Technology Corporation) "is an important step made by CASC to enhance its presence in the field of geographical information," said Lei Fanpei, vice president of CASC.
The geographical information industry has grown rapidly in China with it expanding over 25 percent each year from 2006-10. The industry's output value exceeded 100 billion yuan (15.7 billion U.S. dollars) in 2010 and is expected to reach 150 billion yuan this year, according to Lei.
He said CSMTC must strive to become a world-class provider of comprehensive geographical information, which is one of the company's goals.
CSMTC was initially established by the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping in 1992. At the end of 2003, approved by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Ministration Commission of the State Council, it was reestablished under China Satellite Communications Corporation (China Satcom). In April 2009, it was merged with China Satcom and moved under CASC.
According to the decision of CASC, CSMTC was relaunched in 2011 to primarily engage in satellite navigation and positioning, navigation electric mapping, dynamic traffic information, aerial photogrammetric surveying, and satellite imaging.
