BEIJING, Mar. 19 (China Space News) — China is building a high-resolution earth observing system, and plans to have it ready for testing in 2013 and fully operational by 2020, according to a statement from the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (SASTIND).
China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation is the main contractor of the project. According to the statement, research and experiment tasks of various systems have continued to be carried out without problems.
The high-resolution earth observing system, relying on satellites and aircraft, will be designed and developed to allow China to observe the entire surface of the earth in all weather conditions and around-the-clock, the statement read.
According to SASTIND, once the it is complete, the system will be relied upon to provide information services and policymaking support for many areas of China, including agriculture, disaster prevention and reduction, resources, environment and public security. It will also help in China's economic and social development.
Developing the system is one of China's 16 major scientific projects named in the national outline for scientific and technological development (2006-2020), and was approved in May 2010.
