SOURCE: China Space News     UPDATED: 2015-07-21

July 14, 2015 the CBERS 04 satellite was delivered to China Resources Satellite Application Center of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) by development units. The satellite was officially put into use. Xu Dazhe, director of State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (SASTIND), Wu Yanhua, deputy director of SASTIND, Mr. Leon, Brazil Ambassador to China, Yang Baohua, vice president of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation and other persons attended the delivery ceremony.

The CBERS 04 satellite was jointly developed by China Academy of Space Technology, CASC and Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE). It is an important exemplification of the cooperation between China and Brazil in space high-tech industry, known as "a model of South-South cooperation." The satellite was successfully launched on December 7, 2014. This has a great significance and far-reaching impact on deepening bilateral friendship and promoting pragmatic cooperation between the two countries. May 19, 2015, under the witness of the Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and the Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, China National Space Administration and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Brazil signed the protocol of cooperation for CBERS 04A satellite, promoting the cooperation between China and Brazil in the aerospace field to a new level.

The CBERS 04 satellite could complete the coverage of China’s land during 26 days and get the 5m panchromatic and 10m multi-spectral image maps, etc. to meet the urgent demand for continuously providing a stable medium resolution surveyed data. It has broad application prospects. At present the CBERS 04 satellite has more than 2,000 users in China and long-term users are more than 500. As of July 13, the satellite has processed and produced more than 200000 images data, which played an important role in such areas as crop growth analysis, water-body extraction and hydraulic engineering recognition, geological disasters remote sensing and monitoring.

Leon said that the CBERS 04 satellite is both a "milestone" in the field of aerospace of industry both countries, and a "model of South-South cooperation". The satellite will provide free data services for African countries, making an important contribution to the benefit of all mankind. In the future, the two countries will strengthen cooperation in the CBERS 04 satellite development, and expand bilateral cooperation in other aerospace fields.

Yang Baohua said that in the follow-on satellite applications, the corporation will continue to make good long-term management of the satellite in orbit, and ensure the stable operation of the satellite in orbit. At the same time, we will work closely with various industrial application sectors to strengthen and promote the application of satellite data. CASC will thoroughly implement the relevant requirements of the framework agreement on space cooperation between the two governments of China and Brazil, and successfully complete the development and launch mission of the CBERS 04A satellite and the planning study work for the 05satellite and 06 satellite, greatly promoting the development of China-Brazil space cooperation.
